We have a non-powered front wheel that is approximately 8 cm / 20 cm in diameter. We would like to replace this wheel (P035/036 and P104 in diagram) with another wheel that fits neatly into the axle and is electrically powered. This would be similar to an e-bike conversion project -- but by turning a front attachment into a powered-assisted attachment, it will create a detachable power assist for a wheelchair.The system must meet the following characteristics:
1) It must include a hub motor, a way of controlling the speed, a way of visualizing the speed, a battery, and a battery charger
2) It must be weather-resistant
3) There must be a reasonable plan for wire management - it must be possible to attach and detach the wheelchair attachment, and thus to unplug the hub cable to the battery
4) The battery must hang under the wheelchair
Essentially, in terms of hardware, this project is similar to an e-bike or e-scooter conversion. This should be fairly simple and can be done with off-the shelf parts. We would like someone with an EE background (or a background in making things) to turn this into a clean, well-developed, and weather-resistant product.
v. 1.0: control motor via lever
v. 2.0 use Apple Watch to decrease and increase speed, interface with python bluetooth micro-controller
2 taps = start accelerating
1 tap = keep speed
1 tap = stop
For now, the project is v. 1.0, but please indicate if you have some skills relevant for v. 2.0.
Parts:
Hub motor for front wheel
Battery for hub motor (similar to batteries that power scooters or e-bikes)
Wiring system to connect to battery
(preferable) Velcro or similar for attaching battery to wheelchair
Control for starting and stopping motor
Deliverables:
- Final design (including budget and where to source each part)
- Final product
